The Technical-Scientific, Forecast and Risk Prevention Activities Office:

  1. coordinates the action of the Department to promote activities of a technical-scientific nature aimed at the prediction, prevention and mitigation of different types of risks and the definition of the relevant scenarios;
  2. manages the interactions with the scientific community and with research Institutes and Bodies;
  3. ensures the unitary direction of the activities of the Centres of Competence in relation to the areas of competence of the Department and the monitoring of the state of implementation and the technical and scientific evaluation of the related agreements and conventions;
  4. coordinates the participation of the Department in the national warning systems and the integration of instrumental monitoring networks of the territory and takes care of the supervision of the Central Functional Centre;
  5. supports the activity of the National Commission for Forecasting and Prevention of Major Risks and collaborates with the Agency "ltaliaMeteo";
  6. oversees the participation of the Department in the process of formation of technical legislation in the various sectors of risk;
  7. coordinates the technical and scientific activities for multi-risk assessments.

The Central Functional Centre Unit deals with:

  1. participation in the national warning system for meteorological, climatological, hydrogeological and hydraulic phenomena also via the issuance of bulletins and warnings;
  2. elaboration of organizational and procedure models and development of products for the functioning of the Network of Functional Centres;
  3. collection, monitoring and sharing of elements for the forecast of susceptibility to forest fires and interface fires, including through the issuance of the National Forest Fire Forecast Bulletin;
  4. design, planning, implementation and operational management of the national radar network and of the mosaic of information produced by the meteorological radar systems operating on the national territory;
  5. collection, monitoring and sharing of data deriving from the hydro-pluviometric and instrumental networks.

The Seismic Risk Unit deals with:

  1. design, planning and implementation of activities aimed at the assessment and analysis of seismic risk;
  2. design, planning and implementation of activities aimed at the definition of risk scenarios and possible impact related to the specific area;
  3. operational management and update of the National Accelerometric Network (RAN) and of the Seismic Observatory of Structures (OSS).

The Volcanic Risk Unit is responsible for:

  1. design, planning and implementation of activities aimed at the assessment and analysis of volcanic risk;
  2. design, planning and implementation of activities aimed at the definition of risk scenarios and possible impact related to the specific area;
  3. participation in the national warning system for volcanic phenomena, also through the definition of the relative alert levels.

The Environmental, Anthropogenic and Forest Fire Risks Unit is responsible for:

  1. Design, planning, and implementation of activities aimed at the assessment and analysis of environmental and anthropogenic risks related to the impact on environmental matrices as resulting from complex events of natural and man-made origin; production and transport of goods and harmful materials, including radioactive and nuclear disruption of strategic networks and infrastructures in the energy production sector and the related vulnerability and exposure;
  2. Design, planning, and implementation of activities aimed at assessing and analyzing risks from forest and interface fires;
  3. Design, plan, and implement activities to define risk scenarios and possible impacts on the area.

The Hydraulic, Hydrogeological, Coastal and Drought Risks Unit deals with:

  1. design, planning, and implementation of activities aimed at the assessment and analysis of hydraulic, hydrogeological, and coastal, including tsunami risk and drought risk;
  2. design, planning, and implementation of activities aimed at the definition of risk scenarios and possible impacts related to the specific area;
  3. participation in the national warning system for earthquake-generated tsunamis.
