Pope Francis: final farewell for the faithful at St. Peter's from today

Starting at 11 AM today, April 23, 2025, the public will have the opportunity to pay their final respects to the Holy Father at St. Peter's Basilica. The Basilica will be open today until midnight, Thursday from 7 AM to midnight, and Friday from 7 AM to 7 PM.

This morning, the Operational Committee meeting was held, led by Fabio Ciciliano, Head of the Civil Protection Department. During the meeting, the implemented measures for assistance, healthcare, traffic, and transportation were reviewed to enhance the management of the influx of worshippers. Special attention was given to key transportation hubs, including Termini and Roma San Pietro railway stations, as well as ports and airports.

The National Service structure has been fully activated and will be deployed modularly to respond flexibly to various needs, ensuring the smooth execution of planned events. Several regional mobile units are converging on Rome, with over 2,000 civil protection volunteers arriving in the capital in the coming days to support the community and ensure the successful conduct of operations. The National Fire Department has also been strengthened with specialized units and additional vehicles. Law enforcement agencies will provide an enhanced deployment to guarantee security services, manage traffic, and escort official delegations arriving from around the world.

Desde las 11:00 horas de hoy, 23 de abril de 2025, los fieles pueden rendir el último homenaje al Santo Padre en la Basílica de San Pedro. La Basílica permanecerá abierta hoy hasta las 24:00 horas, y en los próximos días en los siguientes horarios: el jueves 24 de abril, de 7:00 a 24:00 horas; y el viernes 25 de abril, de 7:00 a 19:00 horas.

Durante la reunión del Comité Operativo, celebrada esta mañana bajo la coordinación del Jefe del Departamento de Protección Civil, Fabio Ciciliano, se realizó un balance de las medidas implementadas en los ámbitos de la asistencia, la sanidad, la movilidad y el transporte, con el objetivo de gestionar de forma eficaz el aflujo de fieles. Se prestó especial atención a los nodos ferroviarios estratégicos —como las estaciones de Roma Termini y Roma San Pietro—, así como a los puertos y aeropuertos de la capital.

La estructura del Servicio Nacional de Protección Civil se encuentra plenamente activada y será desplegada de forma modular, con el fin de responder de manera flexible a las distintas necesidades y garantizar el desarrollo adecuado de los eventos previstos. Diversas columnas móviles regionales están siendo trasladadas a Roma, lo que supondrá la participación de más de 2.000 voluntarios de protección civil que operarán en la capital durante los próximos días, en apoyo a la comunidad y para contribuir al desarrollo ordenado de las operaciones. Asimismo, se ha reforzado el contingente del Cuerpo Nacional de Bomberos mediante el envío de unidades y medios específicos. También las Fuerzas del Orden desplegarán un dispositivo especial para garantizar la seguridad, la movilidad y la escolta de las delegaciones oficiales procedentes de todo el mundo.
